Politics of Pakistan

Pakistan is a nation in South Asia, located at the confluence of Central, West and South Asia. The country is renowned for its incredibly diverse and vibrant culture which has been shaped by its rich history and geography. Politically speaking, Pakistan is divided between a range of political ideologies with both religious fundamentalism as well as more secular forms of government vying for control over the nation's destiny. Since its establishment in 1947 following independence from British rule, Pakistan has experienced a series of upheavals including multiple military coups resulting in periods of martial law and temporary suspensions of democracy. While these incidents have impacted the nation's politics significantly, overall Pakistani politics have been defined by two main camps - those favoring greater democratization within the framework established by the previous military government on one hand; those seeking to reinforce traditional Islamic values at all levels on another. The recent years has seen rapid development in terms democratization within Pakistan with regular elections being held as well as increase in civil society initiatives aimed at promoting human rights. This move towards greater democratization saw President Pervez Musharraf resigning his office under pressure from civil society groups after falling to secure re-election through popular vote. At present majority public opinion across country favors PPP led coalition government while army backed establishment supporting PMLN candidates particularly Imran Khan whose party PTI enjoying strong support from youth population.
